Visual stress, also known as Meares-Irlen Syndrome or Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS), is a common symptom of dyslexia; however, it can also affect individuals without dyslexia. Those experiencing visual stress may encounter headaches after reading for a specific duration or may find it challenging to sustain reading for extended periods without feeling fatigued.

Certain symptoms associated with visual stress include:

-       Letters appearing to jump off the page

-       Words on the page going in and out of focus

-       Words shaking or moving on the page

-       Headaches during reading

-       Difficulty with the brightness of a white page

-       Loss of focus or concentration while reading

These symptoms can significantly hinder the essential task of reading, making it both challenging and bothersome. For some individuals, particularly children, this may be their perception of text, and they might not recognize it as a problem. If your child has mentioned any of the aforementioned symptoms or is struggling at school, they may be experiencing visual stress.

The use of colour has proven to be highly effective in alleviating symptoms caused by visual stress. Professor Arnold Wilkins and The Medical Council conducted research using The Intuitive Colourimeter to prescribe precision-tinted lenses.
